Strasbaugh

Who: Who:  Mechanical Design Engineer & Senior Technical Writer

Where:  San Luis Obispo, CA

When:  April 1995 - November 2001

What:  I was fortunate enough to work in two different roles at Strasbaugh, Mechanical Engineer and Technical Writer, which developed a lot of my technical assessment and documentation skills.  Digital photography was just coming into play, and we had to be bold and creative while pioneering the use of the new media for printed and digital technical manuals and other media.

Some highlights of my time at Strasbaugh include:

  • Managed full in-house development, technical writing, illustrations, printing, binding, and assembly of installation, operations and maintenance, user manuals, and machine drawing sets for over 25 different machines including optical polishing and grinding machines and ultra-high-precision semiconductor chemical-mechanical polishing, grinding, and deconstruction analysis machines used in the computer processor chip and LED industries.

  • Led the initial development and transition from full paper-only of installation, operations and maintenance, user manuals, and machine drawing sets to electronic multi-media versions for all machines with interactive search capabilities, digital photographs, and video as visual training aids.

  • Designed, drafted, and maintained accurate part and machine detail documentation of weldment dimensions, machining and finishing specifications, pneumatic systems, fluid systems, electronic systems, bill of materials, and operation and maintenance manual information for full in-house manufactured and assembled machines with prices ranging from $6,000 to over $1,500,000.
